“Freestyle” was originated from the American movie “Saturday Night Fever”. When the movie
first released in the late 70’s, people in UK yearned to learn the dance steps that John Travolta
performed in the movie. In view of this, UK dancing professionals made trips to the States and
brought back the routines in the film to their home country. As time progressed, they improved
and modified the basic routines and started to grade them according to the level of difficulties.
With increased popularity of “Freestyle”, various championships were organized by different
dancing societies and there is also a “British Freestyle Championships” held each year at the
Wintergardens, Blackpool, which has become a major event in the calendar and attracts a very
good entry from across the U.K.!
“Freestyle” dance is a cross between Jazz and Line Dancing. Yet, it is easier to learn than Jazz
(which requires complicated body/limb movements), and is more interesting than Line Dancing
(which only requires simple steps). With fast-beat, spirited disco music as background, a
routine of “Freestyle” can have the effect of aerobic exercises, help burn calories, and improve
cardiovascular fitness. “Freestyle” is undoubtedly another perfect sport for today’s office
workers.
